Melania or the pope: Who brokered the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire in Oleshky?

A localized ceasefire announced on October 23 in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town in Ukraine’s Kherson region, is intended to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and evacuations for civilians who want to leave. Damaged by war and flooded after the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in 2023, the town faces severe shortages of food, medicine and other supplies; the United States estimates its population at 1,700 to 2,000. The White House credits First Lady Melania Trump with mediating the truce, while the Vatican says the pope helped bring about the pause through calls with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The ceasefire is scheduled to end on Sunday and is not a comprehensive end to hostilities.

South Kivu: Clashes reported between FARDC and FRN in Fizi and Walungu territories

Clashes took place on Monday, October 26, between the Congolese army (FARDC) and fighters from the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN) in several areas of Fizi and Walungu territories in South Kivu. In the Fizi highlands, fighting was reported around Kawihene, Rugezi and Point Zéro, with both sides reportedly using drones and heavy artillery; clashes were also reported at Mitimbili and Munanira. Military sources say the FARDC retook Mitimbili, though this has not been independently confirmed, while local groups and the army denied reports of an FRN presence in Kawizi or an advance toward Uvira. Governor Jean-Jacques Purusi denounced what he called a “media war” and urged residents to remain calm, saying Uvira remains protected by the FARDC and its allies.
