Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics: Kiiraay officials at the center of controversy

The opening ceremony of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games at the Abdoulaye-Wade Stadium in Diamniadio was praised for its staging, artistic performances and cultural scenes. The show’s success was nevertheless overshadowed by low attendance and sparsely occupied stands. Officials from Kiiraay, a party in the governing coalition that was reportedly responsible for much of the political and popular mobilization, are now facing questions. Local elected officials reportedly lacked the logistical resources and support needed to bring their members, supporters and constituents to the event.
