Damascus, Amman contradict each other on attack that killed civilians

Jordanian air attacks on Syria’s Deraa and Suwayda regions on Monday evening have stirred public anger, particularly after images circulated of a grandmother and her three grandchildren killed. Amman says its retaliatory strikes killed more than 20 ISIL fighters at what it called terrorist group hideouts linked to an attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Jordan. The church attack, claimed by ISIL, killed nine people and wounded at least 34 in the village of Hamoud. Researcher Navvar Saban said Syrians expect Damascus to protect them and demand accountability, warning that anger could turn against the authorities if they prioritize ties with Jordan.
