Davis Chirchir Announces Tighter Oversight of Commercial Drivers After Fatal Mtito Andei Crash

Kenyan Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir announced tougher road-safety measures after the October 25 crash near Mtito Andei on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. The ministry plans to strengthen funding and management of black spots, carry out targeted infrastructure improvements, and intensify enforcement against dangerous driving, reckless overtaking and speeding. Preliminary reports blamed the crash on dangerous overtaking; an earlier collision on the same highway killed 17 people in Salama on October 3. The article gives differing death tolls for the Kanga crash, reporting at least 24 deaths and also quoting Chirchir as referring to 22 victims.
