Deadly Thiès Building Collapse: State Says Owner Violated the Law

A building under construction collapsed on October 27, 2026, in the Sud Stade district of Thiès, killing one person and trapping two others, who were rescued alive and taken to a health facility. The Urban Planning Ministry says the building had permission to be raised only to R+3, but an inspection on June 9 found it had reached R+5 without authorization, prompting a stop-work order. The cause of the collapse remains unknown and will be examined in a technical assessment of the structure, foundations, materials, and construction work. The ministry says it will step up inspections and reiterates that prior authorization is required for additional floors.
