Democrats dominate NYC races, Hochul re-elected New York governor

Progressive candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won three seats in the House of Representatives: Brad Lander in the 10th District, Darializa Avila Chevalier in the 13th and Claire Valdez in the 7th. Their victories strengthen the progressive political shift in the New York City area that began with Mamdani’s 2025 mayoral win. The three representatives-elect responded to Donald Trump’s pledge to end annual US military aid to Israel by year’s end; cutting off the aid was central to their platforms as they opposed the war in Gaza. The headline also reports that Kathy Hochul was re-elected governor of New York.
