An intestinal infection caused by the bacteria Shigella is becoming increasingly difficult to treat, with a rise in antibiotic-resistant strains, especially among gay, bisexual men, and men who have sex with men. Shigellosis causes bloody diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, and is transmitted mainly through fecal-oral contact.
