‘Dire situation’: Lebanese prisoners on hunger strike for 18 days

Hundreds of inmates at Roumieh prison in Lebanon have been on a hunger strike for over two weeks, with their condition described as dire. They are refusing food, water, and medication to protest the suspension of a general amnesty law that could have led to their release or sentence reduction. The strike began on September 12, mainly involving prisoners arrested for supporting the Syrian revolution. Lebanon's prisons are severely overcrowded, housing about 8,500 inmates—nearly double the capacity, with overcrowding exceeding 330%.
