Dissolution of the Assembly: The countdown has started, what will change in Senegal

Starting December 2, 2026, the Senegalese president will be able to dissolve the National Assembly after losing his majority to Pastef led by Ousmane Sonko. Dissolution becomes legally possible after two years of the legislature, elected in November 2024. Since breaking with Pastef in May 2026, the president no longer controls the parliamentary majority, marking a major political shift with an unprecedented cohabitation. Officially, no decision has been made, but some close to the government already mention the possibility of new legislative elections.
