Douala: Final tribute to Bissi Mag, the unforgettable singer of “Simo”

Bissi Mag, whose real name was Luc Romuald Noubissi Fotso, died on July 29 at Douala General Hospital after an illness. Born in 1971 in Nkongsamba and originally from Bandjoun, he became widely known in 2000 with “Simo,” a song in the Ghomala language, and championed the traditional sounds of the Grassfields. He also recorded “Muto,” “Kuate” and “Pekuike?”; his wide-brimmed hat and Ndop outfits became hallmarks of his image. The body-lifting ceremony marks another stage in bidding farewell to the artist, whose songs remain an important part of Cameroon’s musical repertoire.

Before his music career, he played for Stella Club d’Adjamé, FC Sète and ASEC Mimosas, and captained the Elephants when Côte d’Ivoire won the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal.
