DR Congo: 129 cholera cases and 14 deaths recorded in Mbandaka

At least 129 cholera cases, 14 deaths and 68 recoveries have been reported in the Wangata and Bolenge health zones of Mbandaka, according to a provisional tally released on October 30 by the Equateur provincial health division. Bolenge, the outbreak’s epicenter, has recorded 104 cases, while Wangata has recorded 77; the figures overlap in part because patients were transferred between treatment centers. Health officials suspect the arrival of three boats from Kinshasa contributed to the outbreak, and say about 100 of the roughly 800 passengers showed symptoms consistent with cholera. Mbandaka Mayor Yves Balo urged residents to follow preventive measures, including handwashing, treating or boiling drinking water, and disinfecting motorcycle taxis that transported patients.

Health authorities probe two suspected Ebola cases in northeast Nigeria

Two suspected Ebola cases have been identified in northeast Nigeria, where health authorities have isolated the individuals and begun contact tracing and laboratory testing. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said the cases are not confirmed and that test results will determine their status. Nigeria reported its first case in more than a decade on October 20, after a Swiss woman who travelled from Uganda tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain; she and her husband, a Swiss diplomat, were evacuated to Switzerland. The outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May and has caused more than 5,000 deaths and over 10,300 confirmed cases.

FG deploys experts to Ogun over recurring gas emissions in schools

The Federal Government has sent a specialised technical team to Ogun State to investigate recurring subsurface gas emissions that have raised health concerns and disrupted classes at secondary schools in the Ijebu axis. Coordinated by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the investigation aims to identify the geological source and recommend lasting solutions. Team leader Prosper Okonedo said preliminary indications point to possible natural geological processes rather than petroleum pipeline leaks, but further technical investigation is needed. NUPRC Chief Executive Oritsemeyawa Eyesan directed experts from the commission’s Lagos regional office to work with the state government.
