DR Congo census: Mapping underway in Kinshasa ahead of 2027 population count

Census mapping is underway in Kinshasa to prepare for the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s second General Population and Housing Census, with enumeration scheduled to begin in July 2027. Professor and researcher José Mangalu Agbada said the preparatory work will geolocate buildings, identify households and infrastructure, and define enumeration areas to organize census workers’ efforts. After Kinshasa, mapping teams will be deployed to the country’s other 25 provinces; the preliminary data will guide the full population count. The announced budget for the census operations is $192 million, with support from technical and financial partners including UNFPA.

Civil society is calling for victims to be remembered and for stronger efforts on justice, reparations, and support for displaced people; former Beni civil society leader Gilbert Kambale describes shattered families and the need for psychological care and socioeconomic reintegration.
