Drama at Burudi Nabwera’s Burial as Leaders Attempt to Stop Natembeya’s Speech

At former minister Burudi Nabwera’s burial in Trans Nzoia on October 24, 2026, some leaders tried to take Governor George Natembeya’s microphone, accusing him of speaking too long and delaying the ceremony. Natembeya insisted on continuing, saying the programme scheduled the burial for 2 p.m.; police intervened, and the proceedings were briefly disrupted as some of the hundreds of mourners reportedly left. After receiving more time, the governor completed his speech and accused President William Ruto’s administration of sidelining Trans Nzoia in development projects. Nabwera, Kenya’s first ambassador to the United States and its first permanent representative to the UN, died aged 99 in Nairobi on October 8.
