Non-timber forest products account for nearly 23.3% of household income around Kahuzi-Biega National Park, mainly used to purchase food, providing an average of 29% of household nutrition. Their economic exploitation faces challenges such as low prices, seasonality, resource scarcity, high taxes, and marketing difficulties in urban areas. The FAO calls for sustainable practices and better market access to fully realize their economic and nutritional potential. These figures are from a 2024 study in South Kivu.
