DRC Human Rights Commission denounces poor detention conditions at Lubumbashi Criminal Police

The National Human Rights Commission in Haut-Katanga denounced the detention conditions of more than 500 people held at the Criminal Police premises in Lubumbashi. They were arrested on Sunday during a joint operation by the Congolese National Police and the FARDC at a mining site in Kambove and are suspected of involvement in insecurity and theft of mining products. Provincial coordinator Joseph Kongolo described a hangar designed for about 50 people, faulty sanitation facilities and blocked toilets. The commission called on the governor of Haut-Katanga to intervene and said the state is responsible for ensuring dignified detention conditions.
