Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe, 84, is a key figure in the fight against Ebola in the DRC. He helped identify the virus during the first outbreak in 1976 in Yambuku. The DRC is currently facing its 17th Ebola outbreak, mainly in Ituri province, with 808 confirmed cases and 192 deaths. The causative Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or treatment.
