DRC: strengthened controls amid Ebola outbreak

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, health authorities are increasing surveillance due to the Ebola outbreak declared in May 2026, which has exceeded 7,400 confirmed cases and resulted in over 3,600 deaths as of September 16. Controls are intensified along major routes, on riverways, and at borders, especially at Bende-Bende port on the Congo River, where the IOM supports screening with about 1,000 tests daily. Suspected cases are immediately taken for testing to determine if they are Ebola, cholera, or other diseases, and monitoring is extended to displaced persons areas and neighboring countries including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic.
