Andy Burnham said no former member of the UK armed forces should have to sleep on the streets this Christmas. The prime minister will write to councils across England on 11 November, urging them to plan accommodation and work with local organisations and charities. The government will allocate £8.7m to eight organisations supporting veterans, including people with health or addiction problems, while Burnham wants councils to use some of the £874m already announced to tackle homelessness for veteran housing. An estimated 4,793 people slept rough in England on a single night in autumn 2025, a record high.
