Early International Retirements in Africa: Martin Mimb Points to Discontent in National Teams

In a publication titled “Diplomatic Retirements in Africa,” Martin Camus Mimb argues that early international retirements by African players who are still active at club level are often driven by conflicts within national teams, amateur management, or financial offers from clubs. He recounts that in 2012 Marcel Desailly told him that incentives allegedly led Kevin-Prince Boateng to leave Ghana’s national team and focus on AC Milan, while Chelsea had offered Desailly two additional years on his contract if he retired internationally. Mimb also cites the departures of Ismaïl Jakobs and Joël Matip; Matip said he wanted to devote more time to his club and family. Mimb argues that better national-team organization and merit-based selections could help curb such retirements.
