Eastern DR Congo: Belgium reaffirms support for the Doha and Washington processes while acknowledging slow implementation

Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot reaffirmed Belgium’s support on October 21 for the Doha and Washington processes, despite slow progress and continuing insecurity in eastern DR Congo. Addressing the Chamber’s Foreign Affairs Committee, he urged the parties to fully and faithfully implement their commitments and said further meetings were planned for October and November. He welcomed African Union co-facilitators’ visits to Kinshasa, Goma and Kigali, and warned against attempts to derail the negotiations. Brussels will continue consultations with regional partners, the European Union and countries involved in mediation.

Dr. Malao Kanté, a political philosophy researcher at UCAD, says Senegalese people may accuse Sonko of blocking the country for political reasons, while a budget deadlock could threaten salary payments and worsen business failures and layoffs. Minister-counsellor Aldiouma Sow also condemned the move as hypocritical and dangerous for thousands of households. Kanté notes that the president has constitutional options, including governing by ordinance or decree, even if Pastef refuses to approve the bill.
