Ebola Alert in Nigeria: Cameroon Strengthens Health Surveillance

After an Ebola case was reported in Abuja, Cameroon’s Public Health Minister, Manaouda Malachie, called an extraordinary meeting of the Strategic Committee for Health Emergencies in Yaoundé on October 22, 2026. Cameroon plans to strengthen health checks for travelers at airports, ports and land border crossings, mobilize health facilities and rapid response teams, and prepare isolation sites. The minister advised people to wash their hands, avoid contact with suspected cases, and refrain from handling bushmeat or animals found dead. Anyone who develops a fever within 21 days of travel to an affected country or contact with a suspected case should seek medical care promptly or call 1510.

Niger State is prioritising the integration of mental healthcare into primary health centres to bring assessments, counselling and referrals closer to residents. Health Commissioner Dr Murtala Muhammad Bagana, speaking through Permanent Secretary Dr Abdullahi Imam at the 2026 World Mental Health Day briefing, said existing records do not fully show the scale of mental health challenges. Insecurity, displacement, family difficulties and substance-related problems contribute to psychological distress, and the government plans to strengthen routine reporting and community-level assessments. Bagana also called for more funding, trained professionals and functional referral systems, and urged residents to reject stigma and discrimination.

Louga: Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia Confirmed in Goats

After several weeks of unusual goat deaths, particularly in the Niayes area, laboratory analyses confirmed contagious caprine pleuropneumonia in the department of Kébémer, in the Louga region. Aya Ndiaye, head of Louga’s Departmental Livestock and Animal Production Service, told the APS that the alert followed a report from the president of a cooperative in Thieppe, and samples were collected in several localities, including Léona. Small-ruminant pasteurellosis was initially suspected but was not confirmed. The disease is highly contagious and can devastate herds, but poses no danger to humans; livestock services urge farmers to monitor animals and report suspected cases promptly.
