Five months after it was officially declared, the Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak remains active in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with 9,144 confirmed cases and 4,410 deaths, according to the WHO. It has spread across seven provinces and 65 health zones; Ituri accounts for more than 70% of confirmed cases, while transmission continues in North Kivu and Haut-Uélé. Delays in detecting cases, difficulties tracing contacts, insecurity and limited access to communities are hampering the response, and treatment capacity is under pressure in North Kivu. A second case has been confirmed in Kenya.
