Ebola: UN expresses confidence in Nigeria’s containment efforts

The UN expressed confidence in Nigerian health authorities’ ability to contain a confirmed case of Ebola Bundibugyo, imported by a woman who had recently travelled to Uganda. Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric praised the swift response and contact tracing, and urged countries to cooperate with the WHO and follow international health regulations. The patient, who developed symptoms on October 7, tested positive on October 20 and is in isolation; 44 people who may have been exposed are being monitored.

First Group of Ebola Contacts to Leave Quarantine on Sunday, MoH Confirms

Kenya’s Ministry of Health says the first group of people quarantined after Ebola exposure can begin returning home on Sunday, October 25, after completing 21 days of monitoring without symptoms. Health Director-General Patrick Amoth said the discharges will be overseen by the Kenya National Public Health Institute, led by Acting Director-General Kamene Kimenye. Kenya has confirmed nine infections, and by October 20 officials had traced and quarantined 134 of 135 identified contacts; no community transmission has been reported. The WHO requires 42 consecutive days without a new confirmed or probable case before an outbreak can be declared over.

France reports first human Shamonda virus case, says no health risk

French health authorities reported the first human detection of Shamonda virus in a severely immunocompromised patient who died earlier this month. Preliminary findings suggest the patient was infected by a midge bite in eastern France, where the virus circulated in animals during spring and summer, and that neurological complications were likely linked to the infection. The health and agriculture ministries said no risk to the general public had been identified, while investigations continue. First detected in Europe in late July, the virus has now been reported in 14 western European countries.
