Ebola: WHO endorses two new vaccine candidates against Bundibugyo virus

The WHO has recommended two vaccine candidates against Bundibugyo virus, which is causing the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Oxford University and the Serum Institute of India developed ChAdOx1 BDBV, while Moderna developed mRNA-1469; both are expected to join a clinical trial launched last month alongside Ervebo, which is not approved for this strain. The trial is led by the DRC’s National Institute of Biomedical Research with international partners. Preliminary safety and immunogenicity findings are encouraging, but efficacy still needs to be confirmed; Africa CDC reports 10,444 confirmed cases and more than 5,300 deaths.
