JAMB lists Armed Forces medical college on admission portal

The Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences (AFCOM-HS) has been listed on the JAMB portal for the 2026/2027 academic session, ahead of admitting its first 100 cadets. Education Minister Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa announced the development on October 20, 2026. Located at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, the college has National Universities Commission approval to offer Medicine and Surgery and Nursing Science. It will train doctors, nurses and other health professionals through a programme combining medical education with military officer training.

Ebola in Nigeria: Jean Kaseya calls for urgent international mobilization

Following confirmation of a Bundibugyo-strain Ebola case in Nigeria, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya urged the international community to provide immediate support. He said he had spoken with Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate and praised the authorities for promptly reporting the case. Kaseya said the outbreak, which affects several countries across three African regions, is the most geographically widespread in history, with a fatality rate approaching 50% in the DRC. Africa CDC is mobilizing support in Nigeria, stepping up its response in the DRC and Kenya, and maintaining heightened vigilance in Uganda.

CDC reports third measles death in the United States this year

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed a third measles-related death in the United States this year on Tuesday but did not identify the state. As of October 15, the agency counted 4,410 cases nationwide, while Pennsylvania, the hardest-hit state, had reported 1,286 cases and five deaths as of Monday. The outbreak has spread to 42 Pennsylvania counties, beyond its initial epicentre in Lancaster County. The federal death tally has drawn scrutiny because the CDC now relies on National Center for Health Statistics mortality data rather than reports from state health departments.

Over 41 million menopausal women are actively employed across Africa

An estimated 41 million menopausal women are currently employed across Africa, while nearly 80% of women experiencing menopause in the United Kingdom are in work. Dr Kovila Parsuramen, Medical Director of WorkSafe at International SOS, says symptoms can begin before the average menopause age of 45 to 55, and stigma and limited awareness can make it harder for women to seek workplace support. She urges employers to provide education, mental health tools and healthcare support, while fostering open communication. Flexible hours, remote work and practical office resources can also help employees manage symptoms.
