Economy: Roadside restaurants cut food portions, forcing customers to rethink their budgets

In Nigeria, inflation, currency depreciation and rising transport costs are driving roadside food vendors to shrink portions while raising prices. Structural technician Emmanuel Osarumwense says he now spends 1,500 naira instead of 1,000 on a meal that no longer fills him, while bricklayer Sunday Agbonkhese says bread and beans can cost up to 3,000 naira. Canteen operator Kudirat Adeyemi says she charges 1,200 naira for a rice-and-meat portion that is nearly half its former size because keeping the old quantity would require a price of 2,000 naira, which customers cannot afford. Her sales have fallen, and she now cooks nearly 5 kg of rice instead of 25 kg.
