Egypt ready to support Saudi Arabia without attacking Yemen

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi said on October 21 at the Egypt 2026 Forum that his country was ready to provide military support to Saudi Arabia if Riyadh requested it, while ruling out an offensive in Yemen against the Houthis. Egypt’s parliament, which he asked on October 17 to authorize possible support, has yet to decide; its decision was postponed until October 26.

The announcement comes as attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz escalate and negotiations to end the nearly eight-month war appear stalled. Washington has ordered some diplomatic personnel to leave Saudi Arabia, while media reports say the US and Israel are planning possible attacks on Iran in the coming weeks.

An Egyptian manufacturer is conducting clinical trials of a candidate vaccine, while the agency is working with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda on trials and compassionate use of Ervebo, which targets the Zaire strain. The outbreak declared in the DRC in May 2026 has caused more than 9,000 confirmed cases and 4,381 deaths; cases have also been reported in Kenya and Nigeria, which confirmed its first imported case on October 20.
