El Niño: the UN struggles to fund food crisis prevention

The UN currently has only about one-fifth of the $202 million requested to assist nearly nine million vulnerable people affected by El Niño in 22 countries. The World Food Programme (WFP) and FAO launched this appeal in June, but $160 million are still needed. Rein Paulsen of FAO warns that the El Niño event could cause droughts, floods, and worsen food security, especially in countries already facing conflicts and malnutrition, mainly in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
