Elephants treat themselves with medicinal plants, witnesses say

Wild elephants in the Mount Elgon region of Kenya use over 35 plants, many with medicinal properties, to treat themselves and their families. A study by the Mount Elgon Foundation, involving local interviews, revealed that elephants select specific plants when unwell, including giving medicinal plants to their calves. The research, published in Scientific Reports, identified 25 plants with known medicinal uses locally. Witness accounts also described elephants using a plant called Angurweet as a remedy for stomach aches.
