Engineer to Sue EPRA, Kenya Power Over New Electricity Tariff Categories

The Kenya Electricity Consumer Society plans to sue the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) over recent changes to domestic electricity consumer categorization made without public consultation. ECSK Executive Director Engineer Isaac Ndereva states that the new classification, which consolidates previous bands into a single 30-100 kWh category, could lead to higher electricity prices for some consumers. The gazette notice on September 18 announced the new categories: DC1 (0-30 kWh), DC2 (30-100 kWh), and DC3 (100-15,000 kWh), with automatic assignment based on a three-month average consumption. Ndereva argues the changes were made secretly and will challenge their legality in court.
