“Enough is enough”: Danish youth protest cuts to student grants

Thousands of Danish high school and university students are expected to protest in Copenhagen on Wednesday against the government’s plan to reduce the public student grant, known as SU. Eleven student groups have called for a peaceful gathering at 12:30 p.m. at City Hall Square, followed by a march to Parliament; the Danish High School Students’ Association expects about 10,000 demonstrators, with further protests elsewhere in the country. The plan would end grants for students living with parents whose annual income exceeds €94,000 and reduce them for students whose parents earn between €55,500 and €94,000. The higher education ministry estimates that 14,000 students would lose their grant and 8,000 would receive less; the government also proposes limiting unemployment benefits for new graduates to those who worked for 18 of the final 24 months of their studies.

₦70,000 Transport Allowance: Labour Veterans Step Into NLC–TUC Dispute

Veterans from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) intervened in a dispute between presidents Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo over the Federal Government’s approved ₦70,000 transport allowance. Their exchanges had escalated into personal attacks on national television, raising concerns about unity in the labour movement. In Abuja, former NLC president Comrade Wabba said veterans, including Peter Esele, Bobboi Kaigama, Hassan Sunmonu and Abdulwaheed Omar, had called for hostilities to stop and agreed to continue discussions. They plan to resolve what Wabba called a “family misunderstanding” through formal dialogue and prevent further clashes.
