EPL: Alonso reacts to Penders’ performance and own goal after 2-0 defeat to Tottenham

Chelsea lost 2-0 to Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, where Mike Penders made his first Premier League start in place of Emiliano Martinez, who was out with a fractured jaw. The Belgian goalkeeper turned Mateus Fernandes’ corner into his own net in the 77th minute while being challenged by Jan Paul van Hecke. Mathys Tel scored Tottenham’s second in the 87th minute, and Cole Palmer was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Xabi Alonso said the team faced mistakes collectively and that Chelsea stood behind Penders as he learned from the experience.
