EPRA Introduces Fines for Illegal Dumping of Excess Solar Power Into Grid

Kenya Power consumers who feed excess electricity into the grid without approval will now face a dumping surcharge, as per the amended 2023 tariff schedule. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has classified unauthorized injections as dumping and will bill at the base tariff. Kenya Power warned against unauthorized connections due to safety risks and grid stability concerns. These measures are part of the 2024 Net-Metering Regulations, which allow consumers to generate and export surplus power up to one megawatt under a net-metering agreement, with the possibility of disconnection if the network's safety or reliability is compromised.
