Ethiopia’s government announced on Friday that it would establish a six-month interim administration in Tigray after weeks of fighting with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The TPLF launched an offensive against federal forces on September 23, after which government troops recaptured strategic positions, including the regional capital, Mekele. The new administration is intended to restore political stability and prepare free and transparent elections. Tigray had remained outside Addis Ababa’s control since the 2020–2022 war, and tensions have persisted despite the 2022 peace agreement.
