Ethiopia: Renewed fighting in Tigray revives fears of a regional crisis

Human Rights Watch says renewed fighting in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region is worsening an already precarious humanitarian situation, with reports of civilians killed or injured. On 13 October, Laetitia Bader, HRW’s deputy Africa director, said the organisation had received reports of airstrikes and shelling before government forces took several strategic towns. Bombardments have also affected medical facilities, forcing some to close while the health system remains fragile. HRW is calling for safe humanitarian access, access to the region for international media and investigators, and independent monitoring of the reported violence.
