Ethiopian gov’t-aligned group claims close to full control of Tigray region

An armed group aligned with the Ethiopian government has claimed it is close to gaining full control of the Tigray region, following renewed fighting between federal forces and a TPLF-led opposition alliance. The commander of the Tigray Peace Forces stated that TPLF forces had been wiped out, while residents reported Ethiopian government forces advancing towards Mekelle. TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael acknowledged some areas are occupied but vowed to counter-attack. The conflict has escalated after the collapse of the 2022 peace deal, with fighting spreading to neighboring regions of Amhara and Afar.
