Ethiopia’s army promises restraint amid fears of new civil war

Ethiopia’s federal military has stated it is handling rising tensions in the country’s north with restraint amid fears of another civil war. Army Chief of Staff Field Marshal Berhanu Jula accused Eritrea of funding armed groups to weaken Ethiopia, describing the 'Tsimdo' alliance as part of a longstanding pattern of hostile alliances supported by outside backing. Fighting has spread from Tigray into Afar and Amhara regions, with the Ethiopian army claiming to have killed 272 Tigrayan fighters in North Wollo. The TPLF described the situation as a full-scale offensive involving infantry, mechanized units, and drones.
