In 2025, Kenya imported about 5.5 million tonnes of petroleum products worth roughly Sh511 billion, exceeding the combined earnings from tea, flowers, fruits, and vegetables, which totaled Sh442 billion. Electrification could reduce the country's dependence on petroleum imports, as electricity is predominantly renewable. Unlike Ethiopia, which benefits from cheap electricity due to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Kenya faces different challenges regarding foreign exchange and the vehicle market.
