Ex-Minority Whip Appeals Judgment Nullifying Gombe APC Primary

Ali Isa JC, former House of Representatives Minority Whip and member for Balanga/Billiri, has appealed a ruling that nullified his victory in the APC primary in Gombe State. On September 30, 2026, Justice Vera Ibrahim Eneabo ruled that he should have left his parliamentary seat before contesting the primary, classifying National Assembly members as political appointees. Constituents have also petitioned the National Judicial Council, arguing that the interpretation conflicts with the Constitution and could require all elected officials to resign before seeking another term. The Court of Appeal is expected to begin hearing Isa’s case in the coming days.

He says his economic recovery plan would boost local production, support minimum-wage earners and students, and reduce government waste.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said new curfews would be imposed on Tuesday wherever needed, after riots followed demonstrations over the cost of living and poor high-school conditions. Partial curfews are already in place in Paris, Bordeaux and Nice, and restrictions targeting minors are due to begin in several Marseille districts. In Limoges, a man suspected of links to the ultra-left was arrested over the burning of the historic town hall, whose destruction has become a symbol of the violence. Emmanuel Macron acknowledged shortcomings in the handling of the protests, as the government scheduled further emergency talks with social media platforms and trade unions.
