Explained: Why Motorcycle Number Plates Are Different From Vehicle Plates - Kenyans.co.ke

Motorcycle registration numbers in Kenya start with 'KM', as mandated by law, while ordinary vehicles use a different format. The distinction is based on vehicle type and registration category assigned by NTSA, not on make or model. Motorcycle plates must have seven characters with the 'KM' prefix, be mounted at the rear, and measure 155x205 mm with black characters on a yellow reflective background. Ordinary vehicles have plates at both front and rear, with different dimensions, and other vehicle categories have unique prefixes such as 'Z', 'KTC', 'KHM', and 'KTW'.
