On June 9, 1863, the largest cavalry battle in North America took place at Brandy Station, Virginia. Union forces under Alfred Pleasonton attacked J.E.B. Stuart's 9,500 horsemen, who were screening Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania. After an all-day fight with shifting advantages, the Union withdrew, but their cavalry gained confidence. A Confederate soldier in Cobb's Legion described his unit's role in a letter to the Augusta Weekly Chronicle & Sentinel.
