Fake Drinks May Be Causing Liver and Kidney Diseases in Ondo, NMA Warns

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Ondo State has warned that suspected counterfeit or adulterated drinks may be contributing to liver and kidney diseases among young people. State chairman Dr Roland Bola Arohunmolase cited cases of cirrhosis among teenagers and liver and kidney disease in people aged 22 to 30, while saying investigations have not established a definitive link. He recalled suspected drink-poisoning incidents in Odigbo and Irele that reportedly killed at least 50 people, as well as an earlier methanol-related incident in Ilere. The NMA urged the FCCPC and Ondo authorities to carry out unannounced inspections of markets, supermarkets, hotels and bars.
