At midnight on Tuesday, air strikes hit Yemen’s capital Sanaa, which had been largely spared from bombing since a 2023 truce between the internationally recognized government and the Houthis. The Yemeni government announced a new military offensive, Operation Dawn of Yemen, to retake Sanaa from the Houthis, who have held the city since September 2014. Recent air strikes, including one on Sanaa’s international airport, have caused civilian casualties, and most residents fear their city will become a war zone again. Memories of the 2015 Decisive Storm operation, which killed hundreds of civilians, remain vivid, as the government continues its campaign against Houthi positions.
