Federal Government Rolls Out Two Measures to Protect Retirees from Poverty and Ill Health

Nigeria’s federal government, through the National Pension Commission (PenCom), will launch PenCare and the Minimum Pension Guarantee during the first National Pension Week, scheduled for October 26–30, 2026. He says his economic recovery plan would boost local production, support minimum-wage earners and students, and reduce government waste.

He says public funds spent on such benefits could instead support education, healthcare and infrastructure as families face inflation and declining social services. Adebayo cited more than $300 million spent by 33 states on governors’ offices, government houses and executive travel in six months in mid-2026, as well as nearly N1 trillion regularly earmarked for luxury vehicles and executive renovations. He promised to curb the spending, eliminate unconstitutional vehicle allowances and restructure public finances.
