Fibroid without the knife: How sound waves are giving women a new treatment option

For generations, the word 'fibroid' has instilled fear in Nigerian women, leading to heavy bleeding and severe pain. Traditionally, treatment involved surgical procedures like myomectomy or hysterectomy. However, High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology now allows for the treatment of fibroids without surgical incisions. Patricia Omoke, who suffered from fibroids, became the first beneficiary of this non-invasive treatment after being shortlisted in a campaign by the Fibroid Care Centre in Lagos.
