Fire destroys shelters at Kigonze IDP site in Bunia

On September 23rd, an fire broke out around 1 p.m. at the Kigonze IDP site in Bunia’s Mudzi-Pela neighborhood, during a security cordon operation. Several shelters and belongings of displaced persons were destroyed, with the site originally hosting around 19,000 people. Some displaced individuals accuse the FARDC of setting the fire to force them to leave, but no independent evidence supports this claim. Provincial authorities have not yet provided details on the cause of the fire.
