The New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite, was found in a calf in Texas, the US Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday. The parasite is believed to have traveled from Central America through Mexico, evading biological barriers. Screwworm was declared eradicated in the US in 1966. An outbreak could cost the Texas economy $1.8bn and increase beef prices.
