Five-storey building partially collapses in Abuja

A five-storey building under construction partially collapsed on Durban Street in Abuja’s Wuse II district at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 17. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said one worker was injured and taken to a nearby hospital. The FCT Fire Service and the AYA Emergency Response Ambulance Bay team joined search and rescue operations. No deaths were reported.

Anambra State Police said the heavy deployment at St. Faith’s Anglican Cathedral in Awka during a Sunday service conducted by suspended Archbishop Alexander Ibezim was intended to maintain order and protect lives and property. Jigawa NUJ secures release of six inmates

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) council in Jigawa State paid the fines of six inmates at Gumel Correctional Centre who had remained in custody because they could not afford them. The humanitarian intervention was part of the council’s first Press Week; the beneficiaries were Musa Ilu, Umar Sani, Inusa Lawan, Hassan Shu’aibu, Nuhu Hassan and Suraja Tahir. An NUJ delegation also donated essential goods to Dutse Correctional Centre. The centre’s officer-in-charge, CSC Muhammad Nazir, praised the gesture and urged other organisations to follow suit.
