Flash floods kill five in Syria

Heavy rains across several Syrian provinces have killed at least five people, including four children who drowned in bodies of water in Raqqa and Deir Az Zor. A man also died after his car was caught in floodwaters near al-Salmani Bridge, while five people, including two children, remain missing. Flooding damaged infrastructure and caused al-Salmani Bridge to collapse, cutting the road between Raqqa and Aleppo; emergency teams rescued 15 civilians and evacuated about 375 families from three camps. UNICEF said in June that flooding had already adversely affected 17,000 people in Syria this year.

Lubumbashi: One year after pollution blamed on CDM, IRDH demands investigation report and compensation for victims

One year after the industrial wastewater spill on November 4, 2025, attributed to Congo Dongfang International Mining (CDM), the communities of Kasapa, Kamatete and Kamisepe in Lubumbashi are still waiting for the official damage assessment report. Civil society organizations said more than 2.5 million cubic metres of heavy-metal-laden wastewater entered densely populated neighbourhoods. IRDH and its partners are demanding publication of the report and implementation of compensation announced at $6 million for collective reparations and $682,067 for individual claims. They also recall that CDM’s return to operations was conditional on corrective measures, including at least five years of health monitoring and free care for affected people.

Benin: €30 million secured for four solar power plants

AXIAN, Benin’s Deposits and Consignments Fund, IFC and Proparco signed €30 million in financing agreements for the IPP50 solar project, announced in Cotonou on October 29, 2026. With a total cost of €45 million, the project will build four plants in Natitingou, Djougou, Parakou and Bohicon, with combined capacity of 62 MWp and estimated annual output of 110 GWh. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2028; the plants are expected to supply electricity to about 383,000 people and prevent nearly 62,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. Benin’s first independent solar power generation project will sell electricity to SBPE under long-term purchase agreements and operate under a 20-year concession.
