For over a century, Ugandans have been 'externalized' for political or economic reasons, including the deportation of kings Kabalega and Mwanga in 1900. Following the military coup in 1971, thousands fled, leading to a loss of skills. In 1980, a genocide occurred in the West Nile region, but the entry of Yoweri Museveni in 1986 reversed this trend, bringing hundreds of thousands of Ugandans back home.
